Occupational disease remains the leading cause of work-related death in Alberta, yet exposure assessment – the cornerstone of prevention – is routinely absent from safety programs. While injuries are visible, measurable, and audited, chronic health risks from chemical, physical, and biological exposures often go unrecognized, unmeasured, and unmanaged.

This presentation examines why worker exposure is rarely assessed despite decades of evidence linking it to fatal disease outcomes. Drwing on occupational hygiene fundamentals and Alberta experience, it explores cultural, regulatory, and organizational barriers that sideline exposure monitoring, and challenges safety professionals to confront the uncomfortable gap between what we know about occupational disease and what we choose to measure.
