Risk Communication
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE PANDEMIC AND OTHER MAJOR WORLD HAPPENINGS
Day after day we experience major events, acts of terrorism like 9/11, dramatic weather changes resulting hurricanes like Katrina, Fukushima nuclear disaster, and of course the COVID pandemic. One thing these events teach us is that we all have the capacity for fear. At some point we have all feared the unknown – at times we feared each other. The pandemic also taught us how to be more human, how to be supportive of each other, how to be patient, and how the learn about new risks, and how to build information about these major events into how we manage our day-to-day lives.
These events can teach us that we need to think more critically and increase our capacity for improved risk communication. Through these tragic events, we can learn to better understand the challenges of risk communication.
In this session, we will review:
- The foundations of risk communication.
- What went well and what went wrong with cases such as the pandemic and other tragic events.
- The concepts of risk vs. safe.
- How fear needs to be measured to guide strategies for better risk communication.
Risk communication leads us through a process whereby we examine the facts, identify the stakeholders, speak with the stakeholders, understand their bias, provide more information to them, and help them adjust their bias to be more in line with the current thinking. It depends largely on people – how we think (and fear) and what we know about risks. The challenge is to understand people’s bias and help to adjust it consistent with the rest of the facts.
While these events create much hardship, heartache, loss, and suffering, they can also be a great opportunity for us to learn. Join us as we discuss risk communication and the lessons learned from the pandemic and other major world happenings.
