This course is designed to help you implement a robust contractor management process, so that you can ensure your worksites remain safe and healthy, even with multiple contractors, contracted workers, suppliers, vendors, and the public onsite. It provides you with an in-depth overview of employer, contractor, and prime contractor responsibilities and worksite relationships, and enables you to pursue and promote safer work habits. With a thorough overview of the contracting process, including contract development, the four-step contractor management process, conducting orientations, and implementing worksite feedback you’ll have a firm foundation of knowledge on the worksite. Additionally, with the help of handy documentation templates, checklists, and examples, you’ll be able to easily adapt and implement them on your worksite, enhancing safety right away.

learning Objectives

The learning objectives of this course are to:

  • Identify and understand the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of different worksite parties, such as employers, contractors, and prime contractors, as they relate to contractor management
  • Locate, identify, and apply Alberta’s contractor management legislation
  • Describe how worksites function from an organizational perspective
  • Describe the differences between owners and prime contractors
  • Identify when a prime contractor is needed
  • Differentiate between different contractor types
  • Implement the four-step contractor management process, from planning and prequalifying to orientation, assessment, and feedback
  • Screen, interview, and verify appropriate contractors
  • Assess and prioritize bids and proposals
  • Assist in developing robust contracts
  • Differentiate between the orientation needs of small and large contracts, including appropriate documentation
  • Implement leading and lagging indicators for feedback and monitoring


A Certificate of Achievement will be issued upon successful completion of the course exam.

Online Course:

To successfully complete the course, the learner has 3 attempts to achieve 80% or higher on the exam. Online duration subject to student capabilities.

Classroom Course:

AASP will also accommodate in-house training sessions as requested (min 12 participants – max 25 participants / session). Additional courses will be scheduled as needed.
