Why?

On April 29, 2016, a life was tragically lost due to an avoidable workplace incident.

The contracted employee failed to arrive at home from work the following morning and was reported missing and it was later discovered that he was still in his office where he had succumbed to Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

A mall contracted security guard working night shift (8 p.m. to 8 a.m.) was asked by the Property Manager to reset the boiler that had shut down.

The security guard agreed, left his office on the second floor, directly above the boiler room, then went into the boiler room and pressed the restart switch. Then the guard returned to his desk on the second floor of the mall which was directly above the boiler room. The contracted employee failed to arrive at home the following morning and was reported missing and it was later discovered that he had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

As a result, the business where the incident occurred was convicted and fined $150,000 and under the Alberta Creative Sentencing program the funds were allocated for the development of the resources presented on this webpage with the goal of assisting you in recognizing your workplace health and safety obligations and to guide you through the creation and implementation of a health and safety program.
